History Of Colchester Cooker Repairs

Started in 2000 working in partnership after 3 months I knew it wouldn’t work, we were constantly clashing over customer care, bodge jobs & over pricing!

I started by myself aged 31 with no capitol in 2001 without a clue how to proceed, no experience in repairs or marketing, but I did have a passion for customer care, fair pricing & doing repairs as per manufacturer guidelines using original new parts. (it’s sad but 100% true),

My quest to be the best begain by reading a few repair manuals & signing up to be trained as an appliance repairman with the man who wrote the book on the subject Graham Dixon

Graham Condensed his years of servicing and repairing appliances into a short course for about 10 delegates and ran the courses every 3 months, I was broke at the time and he assisted me by letting me do the course and paying later.

The course was based around diagnosing faults with a multi-meter & Insulation tester in a manor that is both safe to the engineer and the client being served. I’m glad I’d stripped a few machines before I went on his course because it was more about safety & diagnosing faults than actually stripping them down and getting your hands dirty!

The course was worth every penny, it gave me the foundation for setting up Colchester Cooker Repairs (formerly All Bubble No Squeak) Trading Name Appliance Repairman Ltd

His course gave me the confidence to go on and repair over 7,000 appliances over 4 years, my team Paul,  Lee (my brother) & I have repaired over 50,000 Ovens, Tumble dryers, washing machines & dishwashers since 2001

After the course I was buying, refurbing and selling washers on bootsales for 2 months every Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday. Most evenings I could be found finding, dismantling & fault finding for the following days parts order… Most nights I was woking til 1 or 2 am,  then up at 7 am to complete the repairs, then off on my repairs for the day. All these appliances gave me valuable experience working on my own machines before ever touching a clients. Quickly I needed a base so I rented a shop in Eight Ash Green near Colchester with a small loan from my best friend Gerald.

Appliance Repairman Ltd was born (as ALL Bubble No Squeak to begin with) at first I started as a repairer of just Hotpoint & Creda Washing Machines but quickly moved into Zanussi, Electrolux & AEG after employing an ex Electrolux engineer, rapidly from there I was taught by Bosch engineers & whirlpool  engineers – also had a spate of learning from University professors about Motors & electronics (mainly conversational) a big break through came from a friends (Craig-Lee) dad Peter Lee from Ajax spares & repairs. Peter repaired vacuum cleaners and taught me some very useful tips & information about ac & dc motors.

A key part of my shop success was buying, refurbing and selling Dyson vacuum cleaners, I refurbed probably about 5-10 a week & they sold as quick… they really saved me, haven’t touched one now for about 12 years, although smelly, dirty & fidly at times, I loved them! Prone to breaking as people draw them over the wooden door thresholds. I’m now quite an advocate of Henry vacuum cleaners, also plastic but long lasting and very easy to repair!
